Thyroid Diet: Indian Foods That Help Manage Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is incredibly common in India — and yet most patients get a prescription for levothyroxine and very little else. The result? Millions of Indians on thyroid medication who still feel exhausted, gain weight, and lose hair — because they do not know that what they eat significantly affects how well their thyroid functions and how effectively their medication works.
The Most Important Rule: Your Thyroid Medication and Food
Take levothyroxine (Thyrox, Eltroxin) on an empty stomach, 30–60 minutes before eating. The following foods significantly reduce its absorption and should NOT be consumed within 3–4 hours of your medication: coffee, tea, milk, calcium-rich foods, high-fibre foods, soy products, and iron supplements.
Key Nutrients for Thyroid Health
Iodine
Iodine is the primary building block of thyroid hormones. Use iodised salt consistently. Seafood (fish, prawns) is especially important — Mumbai's coastal diet naturally includes more seafood, which is an advantage for thyroid health.
Selenium
Selenium is essential for converting inactive T4 to active T3. Indian sources include Brazil nuts (2 per day is enough), sunflower seeds, eggs, mushrooms, and brown rice.
Zinc
Zinc is required for thyroid hormone synthesis. Indian sources include pumpkin seeds, til (sesame), lentils, chickpeas, and whole grains.
Iron
Iron deficiency (very common in Indian women) worsens hypothyroidism and makes thyroid medication less effective. Sources: palak (cooked), methi, rajma, green moong, jaggery, ragi. Eat with vitamin C to improve absorption.
Indian Foods That Support Thyroid Health
Fish and prawns (iodine + selenium)
Eggs (selenium, iodine, iron)
Pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds
Ragi, jowar (zinc, iron)
Rajma, moong dal
Palak, methi (cooked)
Brazil nuts (2/day for selenium)
Walnuts (anti-inflammatory)
Turmeric, ginger, garlic
Foods to Cook Before Eating (Goitrogens)
Goitrogenic vegetables like gobhi, broccoli, and cabbage become problematic only when eaten raw in very large quantities. Cooking significantly reduces their goitrogenic effect. You do not need to avoid these nutritious vegetables — just cook them before eating.
Sample Thyroid Diet Plan
Morning: Take thyroid medication on an empty stomach. Wait 45–60 minutes before eating anything.
Breakfast: 2 eggs (any style) + 1 multigrain roti + 1 cup masala chai. OR moong dal chilla + curd.
Mid-Morning: 2 Brazil nuts + handful of pumpkin seeds + 1 whole fruit.
Lunch: 2 jowar/bajra rotis + rajma or dal + cooked sabzi + raita + salad.
Dinner: Fish curry with brown rice (excellent for iodine and selenium) OR paneer sabzi with rotis. Avoid eating after 8 PM.
The Autoimmune Angle: Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
Most hypothyroidism in Indian women is caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis — an autoimmune condition. For Hashimoto's patients, an anti-inflammatory diet is especially important. Reduce ultra-processed foods. Include omega-3-rich foods: walnuts, flaxseeds, fatty fish. Selenium supplementation has shown benefit in Hashimoto's — under medical supervision.
